How does proper parenting support a child's mental development?

Proper parenting plays a crucial role in a child’s mental development by providing a safe, supportive, and nurturing environment. When parents offer love, encouragement, and guidance, children develop confidence, emotional resilience, and problem-solving skills. Setting clear boundaries, fostering open communication, and encouraging curiosity help shape a child’s cognitive abilities and emotional intelligence. Positive parenting practices also reduce stress and anxiety in kids, allowing them to explore, learn, and grow into well-rounded individuals.

One Simple Thing You Can Do Tonight to Help Your Child Sleep Better

Ask Me Anything

Parenting shapes a child’s emotional, social, and intellectual development. It provides the love, guidance, and support needed for children to grow into confident, responsible, and compassionate individuals. Good parenting helps children develop strong values, resilience, and the ability to navigate challenges in life successfully.

The amount of sleep a child needs varies by age. Here are general sleep recommendations:

  • Newborns (0-3 months): 14-17 hours per day
  • Infants (4-12 months): 12-16 hours (including naps)
  • Toddlers (1-2 years): 11-14 hours (including naps)
  • Preschoolers (3-5 years): 10-13 hours
  • School-age children (6-12 years): 9-12 hours
  • Teenagers (13-18 years): 8-10 hours

Ensuring consistent sleep schedules, a calming bedtime routine, and limiting screen time before bed can help improve sleep quality.

Use parental controls, set screen time limits, and monitor online activity. Educate them about privacy, cyberbullying, and safe online behavior. Keep communication open so they feel comfortable discussing any concerns. Ensure social media accounts are private and teach them to avoid sharing personal information or talking to strangers online.

Screen time should be balanced with other activities like play, reading, and social interaction. Here are general guidelines:

  • Under 2 years: Minimal, except for video calls.
  • 2-5 years: Up to 1 hour per day of high-quality content.
  • 6+ years: Consistent limits based on a healthy balance with sleep, school, and physical activity.

Excessive screen time can impact sleep, behavior, and development, so encourage breaks and offline activities.

  • Infants (4-12 months): 12-16 hours (including naps)
  • Toddlers (1-2 years): 11-14 hours (including naps)
  • Preschoolers (3-5 years): 10-13 hours
  • School-age children (6-12 years): 9-12 hours
